The blog below is a companion to this episode of "What's God Doing."
Have you ever been interested in knowing what God is thinking? Do you ever wonder
what is on Gods heart?
I recently got a library card for the library at Liberty University. I was so excited. When I got there it was very crowded and I got distracted with people watching. It reminded me of a conversation with friends in a Bible study on Revelation.
We were discussing how God spoke to John and showed him all the things in Heaven and about the end times. In a line in chapter 10:4 He tells John to seal up the things he had heard spoken and not to write it down. I remember bringing up the verse that says the Lord will share His secrets with His friends (Psalm 25:14: The secrets of the Lord is with those who fear Him and He will show them His covenant). We started talking about different times in the Bible when that happened, such as Abraham. Then they brought up the verse “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9).
This brings me back to the library. As I watched all the people mill around I realized that God does the same thing. In contrast to your wondering of what people are thinking or their stories, God knows all of it. He looks around knowing the thoughts of everyone but even more so, He knows their hearts.
This reminds me of when God is talking to Satan in the book of Job. “Have you considered my servant Job that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” (Job 1:8). God spoke directly with Job at the end of the book correcting his perspective on Him. Job and his friends thought they understood God, His thoughts, and His ways; God responds to all of them never answering their questions or accusations but instead uses four chapters worth of questions to show them that they don’t know as much as they think.
In contrast to Job, God told Abraham when He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, and even about his descendants exile in Egypt. He talked to Moses face to face and wanted for the rest of His people to do the same (Exodus 19), just like He had created people for relationship in the Garden. God revealed things to the prophets as well.
Knowing God starts with where our hearts are, if we seek Him with all our hearts, He will do a work of sanctification on us. Jesus has already made us righteous before God and broken away the separation between us. We are now the ones that separate ourselves from Him, by not feeling worthy or holding unbelief. He wants to have relationship with us and seeks us out (2 Chronicles 16:9). He people watches. He knows whose hearts are loyal to Him.
So, if you want to know what is on His heart and what is on His mind, seek Him. Try asking Him those things and even ask the questions that are on your heart. He might surprise you with an actual answer back. But as when you are talking to a friend, make sure you know whether it is ok to share with others or not. It might only be for you to know, like John in Revelation 10.
If you want God to speak to you then you should be someone He can trust, though He is way more gracious then people are.
